Teaching English to Children (Young Learners)

Teaching English to Children (YL-TESOL) is a series composed of 11 lectures. The aim of this series is to give newer teachers an introduction and overview of teaching English to children between the ages of 5-12. The lectures focus on both theoretical and practical knowledge that teachers can take with them and use in their classrooms. The lectures expand upon and supplement chapters in the text “Teaching English to Young Learners” by David Nunan. Quizzes, which follow the lectures, are based on information from the lectures and specific text

 

 

Lesson 1 Children as Language Leaners

Lecture 1 focuses on theories that are beneficial for teachers of young learners. It looks at different developmental theories, as well as theories that illustrate differences in learning. The lecture concludes by giving teachers general suggestions of things to incorporate in the classroom.

Lesson 2 Methods and Approaches for Teaching Children

The second lecture introduces different methods and approaches that can help give teachers structure in their classrooms. The importance of planning and the different kinds of planning teachers do is also discussed.

Lesson 3 Classroom Management

The focus of Lecture 3 is classroom management and the role teachers play in developing effective classroom management strategies. Some of the topics discussed include creating bonds with students, the physical environment of the classroom, and motivation.

Lesson 4 Teaching Listening

Lecture 4 covers listening. The importance of listening in the young learners’ classroom is discussed along with listening principles and suggested activities. The lecture ends with a discussion of listening for different age groups.

Lesson 5 Teaching Speaking

Speaking skills are discussed in Lecture 5. Suggestions for creating useful speaking opportunities are introduced, along with different speaking phases children may go through. Teaching pronunciation and the importance of natural communication is also talked about in this lecture.

Lesson 6 Teaching Reading

Lecture 6 introduces the concept of teaching reading to young learners. The lecture begins by discussing factors that affect a student’s reading ability to different approaches used for teaching reading and concludes with some suggested reading activities.

Lesson 7 Teaching Writing

Lecture 7 looks at the topic of writing. Skills required for writing as well as challenges involved with writing are discussed. Tips and approaches teachers can use to teach young learners effective writing skills are also touched upon.

Lesson 8 Teaching Vocabulary

Vocabulary is covered in the eighth lecture. Different activities and stages that learners progress through when learning vocabulary words are talked about in this lecture, along with tips for how to help young children remember new words.

Lesson 9 Teaching Grammar

Lecture 9 explores the idea of how to help young children understand grammar. The concept of how to help children learn grammar without directly teaching it is covered. Suggested activities and grammar concepts for different age groups are some of the topics discussed.

Lesson 10 Assessment and Evaluation

The difference between assessment and evaluation is covered in Lecture 10, along with the introduction of different assessment techniques. The lecture concludes with suggestions of how to choose the most appropriate assessment for your class situation.

Lesson 11 Resources and Tools

Lecture 11, which is the last lecture, discuses resources and tools that teachers can use in the classroom. This lecture explores different materials and resources that are valuable in children’s classes, as well as using people such as parents, and other teachers as resources.
